  30.        X  resources are listed in square brackets with the corre-

  33.        -err   Send error messages to /dev/tty instead  of  stderr
  34.               (useful  if  xpdf  is started from another applica-
  35.               tion, e.g., netscape which  otherwise  pops  up  an
  36.               annoying little window for every error).

  39.               Set  the initial zoom factor (-5 .. 5).  [xpdf.ini-
  40.               tialZoom]
  41.  
  42.        -g geometry
  43.               Set the initial  window  geometry.   (-geometry  is
  44.               equivalent.)  [xpdf.geometry]

  46.        -remote name
  47.               Start/contact  xpdf  remote  server  with specified
  48.               name (see the REMOTE SERVER MODE section below).

  50.        -raise Raise  xpdf  remote  server  window  (with  -remote

  55.        -cmap  Install  a  private  colormap.   This is ignored on

  60.               allocate.  The default is 5 (for a 5x5x5 cube); set
  61.               to  a  smaller  number  to  conserve  color   table

  63.               and on TrueColor visuals.

  65.        -ps PS-file
  66.               Set the default file name  for  PostScript  output.
  67.               This can also be of the form '|command' to pipe the
  68.               PostScript through a command.  [xpdf.psFile]

  71.               Generate  Level  1   PostScript.    The   resulting
  72.               PostScript  files  will be significantly larger (if
  73.               they contain images), but will  print  on  Level  1
  74.               printers.   This  also converts all images to black
  75.               and white.  [xpdf.psLevel1]

  77.        -cmd   Print commands  as  they're  executed  (useful  for
  78.               debugging).

  80.        -h     Print usage information.  (-help is equivalent.)

  82.        Several  other  standard X options and resources will work

  159.               Rotate the page 90 degrees counterclockwise.

  164.               rotate commands  are  intended  primarily  for  PDF
  165.               files  where the rotation isn't correctly specified
  166.               in the file, but they're  also  useful  if  your  X
  167.               server doesn't support font rotation.

  169.        Quit   Quit xpdf.

  171.    Text selection
  172.        Dragging  the  mouse  with  the left button held down will
  173.        highlight an arbitrary rectangle.  Any  text  inside  this
  174.        rectangle will be copied to the X selection buffer.

  176.    Links
  177.        Clicking  on  a hyperlink will jump to the link's destina-
  178.        tion.  A link to another PDF document will make xpdf  load
  179.        that  document.   A 'launch' link to an executable program
  180.        will display a dialog, and if you click 'ok', execute  the
  181.        program.   URL links call an external command (see the WEB
  182.        BROWSERS section below).

  217.  
  218.        If  you  want  to  run xpdf automatically from netscape or
  219.        mosaic (and probably other browsers) when you click  on  a
  220.        link to a PDF file, you need to edit (or create) the files
  221.        .mime.types and  .mailcap  in  your  home  directory.   In
  222.        .mime.types add the line:
  223.  
  224.               application/pdf pdf
  225.  
  226.        In .mailcap add the lines:
  227.  
  228.               # Use xpdf to view PDF files.
  229.               application/pdf; xpdf -err %s
  230.  
  231.        Make sure that xpdf is on your executable search path.

  233.        When you click on a URL link in a PDF file, xpdf will exe-
  234.        cute  the  command  specified   by   the   xpdf.urlCommand
  235.        resource,  replacing  an  occurrence of '%s' with the URL.
  236.        For example, to call  netscape  with  the  URL,  use  this
  237.        resource setting:

  239.               xpdf.urlCommand: netscape -remote 'openURL(%s)'

  241. 2 REMOTE_SERVER_MODE
  242.  
  243.        Xpdf  can be started in remote server mode by specifying a
  244.        server name (in addition to the file name  and  page  num-
  245.        ber).  For example:
  246.  
  247.               xpdf -remote myServer file.pdf
  248.  
  249.        If  there is currently no xpdf running in server mode with
  250.        the name 'myServer', a new xpdf window will be opened.  If
  251.        another command:
  252.  
  253.               xpdf -remote myServer another.pdf 9
  254.  
  255.        is  issued,  a  new  copy  of  xpdf  will  not be started.
  256.        Instead, the first xpdf (the server) will load another.pdf
  257.        and display page nine.  If the file name is the same:
  258.  
  259.               xpdf -remote myServer another.pdf 4
  260.  
  261.        the xpdf server will simply display the specified page.
  262.  
  263.        The -raise option tells the server to raise its window; it
  264.        can be specified with or without a file name and page num-
  265.        ber.

  267.        The  -quit option tells the server to close its window and
  268.        exit.

  270. 2 CONFIGURATION_FILE
  271.  
  272.        Xpdf will read a file called .xpdfrc from your home direc-
  273.        tory (if it exists).  This file can contain two  types  of
  274.        entries.
  275.  
  276.        fontpath directory
  277.               Look for Type 1 fonts in directory.  Xpdf uses this
  278.               only to get the font encoding.   For  display,  the
  279.               font must also be mapped with a fontmap entry.
  280.  
  281.        fontmap PDF-font X-font
  282.               Map  PDF-font  (as  referenced in a PDF file) to X-
  283.               font, which should be a standard X font  descriptor
  284.               with '%s' in the pixel size position.
  285.  
  286.        For example, use:
  287.  
  288.               fontmap        TimesCE-Roman       -*-times-medium-
  289.               r-*-*-%s-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-2
  290.  
  291.        to map the  Central  European  (Latin-2)  version  of  the
  292.        Times-Roman  font.  This assumes that you've installed the
  293.        appropriate X fonts (see mkfontdir(1)).  Xpdf knows  about
  294.        the ISO8859-2 encoding, so you don't need a fontpath entry
  295.        for these fonts.  To use the Bakoma Type 1 fonts, do this:
  296.  
  297.               fontpath /home/derekn/fonts/bakoma
  298.               fontmap      cmb10      -bakoma-cmb10-medium-r-nor-
  299.               mal--%s-*-*-*-p-*-adobe-fontspecific
  300.               fontmap    cmbsy10    -bakoma-cmbsy10-medium-r-nor-
  301.               mal--%s-*-*-*-p-*-adobe-fontspecific
  302.               etc...

  304.        This  assumes  that the Type 1 font files are available in
  305.        the directory /home/derekn/fonts/bakoma.

  307. 2 BUGS
  308.  
  309.        This  is  a  beta  release  of xpdf, and there are still a
  310.        bunch of PDF features which I have yet to implement.
  311.  
  312.        At this point, the biggest problem is that embedded  fonts
  313.        are not handled properly.
